Last night we took a little tour of Real Companhia Velha and tasted three different ports, one 40 years old. It was very young compared to some of the ancient, undisturbed bottles you see in the picture above. (You think travel journalists only take pretty pictures of Europe? Think again!)

What's different about Velha? They've been around long enough to collect some dust and cobwebs, obviously, but Velha's tours (several to choose from) aren't about selling you wine, they're about getting you to understand Port and to recognize the brands you might find in your home country. And, I must say, they were vary tolerant when our cab got mired in traffic and we were late for the last tour of the day. Great, friendly folks; I recommend them highly.

Old Port originally appeared on About.com Europe Travel on Wednesday, May 14th, 2014 at 02:16:41.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

We say no. If you ask us, the view from a hotel room's bathroom can often be just as rewarding as the views you enjoy from the bedroom itself - and all the more so when an extra-large soaking tub is involved in the equation.

For some of the best hotel bathroom views in the world, follow our lead to these fine properties that seriously value bathroom bling: Hotels with the Best Bathroom Views.

Hotels with the Best Bathroom Views originally appeared on About.com Hotels / Resorts / Inns on Thursday, May 22nd, 2014 at 09:35:15.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

3. The Portuguese and Bacalhau

Vasco Amaro is the manager of Salpoente, a recent addition to the Aviero restaurant scene specializing in Codfish--bacalhau in the local lingo. His restaurant is loaded with art that makes you want to wander through with a glass of sparkling wine, weaving between animated diners and compelling modern Portuguese art crying for attention.

The food in Vasco's restaurant is the real art. "It's a playful and wonderful art," I couldn't help thinking as the waiters presented our table with plates containing identical sardine cans, opening them in unison to reveal the cod salad artistically framed by a package that's become famous for preserving another fish popular in these parts: sardines.

When Anita Briland of Anita's Feast asked him why the Portuguese liked salt cod so much, I expected him to hem and haw a bit. But no, Mr. Amaro didn't hesitate to reveal that the cod was, when you cooked it, simply a white fish with no particularly distinct flavors. But when you salt it to preserve the flesh, the process adds texture and concentrates the flavor, becoming something a cook can use in hundreds of ways. And the Portuguese do just that.

This made me think of the difference between boiled ham and prosciutto. Salt, and the resulting loss of relatively flavorless liquid, provides the same benefits.

If you haven't considered Portugal as a travel destination and like fine dining, be sure to consider the country's culinary Renaissance, as chefs continue to hone a cuisine that draws from the past as it becomes thoroughly modern. And do try Salpoente if you're ever in Aveiro, where fine dining isn't as expensive as in the big cities. You might even consider the whole Salpoente experience a bargain.

The Portuguese and Bacalhau originally appeared on About.com Europe Travel on Saturday, May 17th, 2014 at 14:17:26.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

We've left the cool blue-tile world of Porto for the town of Aveiro, the "Venice of Portugal" because, yes, a canal runs through it. Fishing and salt once provided the wealth of Aveiro, but today the town is making the transition to a cultural and tourism economy. Once used to ferry unwanted vegetation from the salt flats to farms to be used as fertilizer, Aveiro's colorful salt works boats called moliceiros ply the waters with loads of tourists sipping the local sparkler these days.

On our food exploration of Portugal, this means that we're eating fresh fish cooked in a variety of ways, from crustacean-rich stews to simple fries and grills. As the temperature has warmed, the lighter meals are very welcome.

We're staying at the fabulous Hotel Moliceiro, which sits pretty behind a tree-shaded park along the main canal. I can't imagine a better place for a hotel. And...it's completely full. If you're too busy to do it, it's a sign you really need a break. You've worked really hard lately. Don't you deserve it?
Some of the questions Europe travel receives seem to come from another planet--but I figure interplanetary travel is better than no travel at all. What I'm thinking is that folks looking to take their their first travel planning steps into the great unknown of international travel are truly confused--so much so that they can't even fathom where to start asking a question.

So I'm taking on some pretty gnarly questions and trying to answer them. It's been a lot of fun, actually. 9. Big Changes at Disney World

I live pretty much next door to Disney World, and am lucky enough to go there as often as I like. Yet I am always amazed at how often the little things change -- a new great snack here, a fabulous tequila bar there -- even as the classic experience remains the same.

But this year, Disney World is introducing major changes. Technology is poised to give your vacation experience a big boost. Yet in classic Disney style, nods to the nostalgic are in there too. Here's a peek at what's new in the World:

MyMagic+
Disney has replaced locks on 25,000+ hotel rooms with RFID readers that open with the tap of your Mickey Mouse wristband, called a MagicBand. It's part of MyMagic+, a brand-new system of managing your trip with fewer lines and more fun. Think of it as Fastpass 2.0. You tap the Mickey Mouse symbol to RFID readers that have been installed at every park entry, souvenir shop, restaurant and attraction. Use your MagicBand to gain access to the theme parks, pay for every Mickey ice cream bar and stuffed animal, and skip the lines at the attractions.

You can set up Fastpass+ times for your family and friends in advance of your visit using the dedicated web site or Disney's app. Once in the parks, a tap of the MagicBand at the Fastpass+ entrance to an attraction lets you skip the lines. When you've used your times, you can reserve more spots at kiosks in the parks or (soon) within the app.
Read up on our best MyMagic+ tips.

Polynesian Village
Disney's Polynesian Resort has always been a nostalgic favorite at Disney World. I remember staying there with my family when it was one of only three hotels, and it's name was the Polynesian Village Resort. As part of a renovation, it's returning to it's original name. Guest rooms and the lobby will be renovated. The best part? Orlando will be getting a Trader Sam's Grog Grotto, modeled after the Trader Sam's at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. Hopefully they'll incorporate a lot of the fun touches the original has, like bar stools that slowly sink to the ground (confusing when you're been drinking a few of their specialty cocktails) and scenes on the wall that come to life when certain drinks are ordered. I'm thrilled to see this fun experience come to Orlando.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
I'll admit, I was a bit sad when they closed down Snow White's Scary Adventures to put up a princess meet-and-greet. The ride was one of the few I could always get my kids on--never a line, and despite the name, not a bit scary (at least, for my little guys). Snow White has a new ride, and I'm happy to say, it's amazing. It's a fun, smooth roller coaster that rocks you from side to side and slows down in the mines so you can savor an absolutely adorable scene of the seven dwarfs singing their signature songs amidst colorful, shining gemstones. Snow White makes a cameo appearance at the end.

It's not for the tiniest of children (the height requirement is 38 inches, about the size of a 3 or 4 year old), but it's not as loud as Big Thunder Mountain or as high-up as Goofy's Barnstormer. It's a great starter roller coaster, and an excellent centerpiece for New Fantasyland. It officially opens May 28.
Read our detailed review of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Big Changes at Disney World originally appeared on About.com Hotels / Resorts / Inns on Wednesday, May 7th, 2014 at 10:03:57.

Permalink | Comment | Email this
