When the first Skate debuted, it offered up a realistic simulation-based alternative to the unrealistic circus that the Tony Hawk franchise had become. Now, the sequel is here with some subtle improvements that push virtual skateboarding to new heights. Still, it's pretty obvious that this franchise has some work to do before it can fully knock the Birdman off his perch. THE BOTTOM LINE: The first Skate was a refreshing take on virtual skateboarding, so expectations were high for this one. Maybe they were a little too high: Skate 2 doesn't quite deliver the revolutionary skating experience that we were all hoping it would be. It's still a lot of fun and has a lot to offer, especially with its awesome multiplayer modes, but the franchise is still a ways away from living up to its full potential.

3. Big Bang Mini

Big Bang Mini's title boggles me a bit, mostly because I can't seem to find a normal sized Big Bang game anywhere. Putting aside such sundry concerns, Arkedo has done it again: they've made a concept that sounds like it could be incredibly mediocre ideas (Remember Nervous Brickdown, one of the most awesome break-out clones ever?) into a game that you should really consider owning. THE BOTTOM LINE: The other day I was talking to my friend -- a non-gamer to the extent that he has never even played a Mario game. I pulled out the DS containing Big Bang Mini and he was like, "Ooh!" and I said, "Ahh! Yeah, it's a fireworks shmup, wanna try?" He was absorbed in about five seconds. It's completely accessible, yet at the same time, the gamer type will go bonkers with the later difficulty and trying to unlock all the content. After all, who doesn't like fireworks?

Featuring revolutionary real-time battles as well as an immersive and original plot, Star Ocean: The Second Story garnered a warm reception from both critics and fans of the genre alike; unfortunately, it just happened to release on the original Playstation at the same time as a little title called Final Fantasy VII -- I'm pretty sure you've heard of it. Thankfully, Second Story is getting a new lease on life with Second Evolution, a magnificent re-release on the PSP.
